Belgian Prime Minister's visit brings a CBI-Federal Police MoU and a renewed energy MoU

Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever made an official visit to India from 2 to 4 September 2026. It was his first visit since he took office in February 2025. Theo Francken, Belgium's Minister of Defence and Foreign Trade, came with him.

The two leaders welcomed the signing of an MoU between India's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Federal Police of Belgium on transnational organised crime and cybercrime. They also welcomed a renewed MoU on renewable energy, which covers green hydrogen, solar, storage and offshore wind.

Belgium reaffirmed its support for India's candidature for permanent membership of a reformed UN Security Council. The two countries agreed to support each other for non-permanent seats: India for the 2028-29 term and Belgium for the 2037-2038 term. They welcomed the conclusion of the India-EU FTA negotiations at the India-EU Summit of 27 January 2026, and noted that 2027 will mark 80 years of diplomatic relations between them.

Revise how non-permanent members of the UN Security Council are elected and for how long they serve, and keep a list of countries that have backed India's claim to a permanent seat. Add a short note on the India-EU FTA and on cooperation in green hydrogen.
