BRICS adopts the New Delhi Declaration at the 18th summit, hosted by India

India hosted the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on 12 and 13 September 2026. The theme was "Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability". On 12 September Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the New Delhi Declaration 2026 had been adopted unanimously.

In the declaration, China and Russia, as permanent members of the UN Security Council, reiterated their support for the aspirations of Brazil and India to play a greater role in the UN, including its Security Council.

The declaration also sets out a technology agenda. It covers artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, digital public infrastructure, quantum technologies and advanced manufacturing.

Why it matters for the exam

For UPSC, this fits Prelims (international groupings) and GS Paper 2 (bilateral, regional and global groupings, and reform of the UN Security Council). For BPSC it fits Prelims and Mains GS Paper 2 (India and the world).

Revise the members of BRICS, its institutions such as the New Development Bank, and the list of past summits and their hosts. For Mains, read the UNSC line with care: it records the support of two permanent members for a greater role for India and Brazil, and it can be used in an answer on UN Security Council reform.
