Cabinet raises the EPFO wage ceiling from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 a month

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a proposal of the Ministry of Labour and Employment to raise the wage ceiling for mandatory coverage under the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 a month. The decision was announced on 16 September 2026. The ceiling was last revised in September 2014.

The change is expected to bring more than 51 lakh additional employees under mandatory coverage. They will get provident fund savings, a pension under the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS) and insurance under the Employees' Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme (EDLI).

The government's outgo is estimated at about ₹11,339 crore a year, and about ₹56,696 crore over five years. EPFO serves around 7.98 crore contributing members in about 7.68 lakh establishments.

Why it matters for the exam

For UPSC, the decision fits Prelims (economy and social security schemes), GS Paper 2 (welfare schemes for vulnerable sections) and GS Paper 3 (labour and the formalisation of the workforce). For BPSC it fits Prelims and Mains GS Paper 2.

Revise what EPF, EPS and EDLI each provide, and how social security for workers is organised in India. In Mains, the numbers in this decision can support an answer on formal employment or on social security for salaried workers.
