India-New Zealand free trade agreement to enter into force on 20 October 2026

21 Sept 20262 min read

On 21 September 2026 Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and New Zealand's Minister for Trade and Investment Todd McClay announced, by video conference, that the India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) will enter into force on 20 October 2026.

The agreement was signed on 27 April 2026 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. New Zealand's Parliament passed the legislation to implement it on 16 September 2026. From the first day, India's exports to New Zealand get zero duty on 100% of tariff lines.

According to Reuters, tariffs on about 95% of New Zealand's exports to India will be eliminated or cut. New Zealand has also agreed to invest $20 billion in India over 15 years.

Why it matters for the exam

For UPSC, this fits Prelims (trade agreements), GS Paper 2 (India and its bilateral relations) and GS Paper 3 (external sector and trade). For BPSC it is a Prelims current affairs item.

Revise the difference between a free trade agreement, a preferential trade agreement and a CEPA, and what a tariff line is. Make a list of India's recent trade agreements, with the partner, the date each was signed and the date it came into force.
